Brunswick Business Journal Staff Report

December 25, 2018 - Dollar General said in a press release that it intends to open 975 stores in 2019, which would propel it even further past brick-and-mortar giant Walmart's count of approximately 5,000 stores. The retailer is closer to more consumers than Walmart, which potentially makes it a more convenient option for many shoppers. Three quarters of the US population now lives just 5 minutes or less away from a Dollar General, compared to 37% for Walmart. Discount retailer Dollar General now has over 15,000 stores, and is on track to have added 900 to that total by the end of its fiscal 2018.

And Dollar General is adding produce to its stores, which can lead to it being a stronger competitor. Dollar General has begun selling produce in more stores; the produce segment is currently available in 425 of its stores with plans to bring it to 200 more in 2019. Walmart is the No. 1 grocer in the US and the segment is important to its overall performance. If Dollar General adds produce to enough stores, it has the chance to win over Walmart grocery shoppers with similarly inexpensive products and a shorter trip to the store.
