Jan. 21 - U.S. Chamber Foundation, military leaders holding ‘Fort Stewart Service Member Transition Summit’ this week

January 21, 2015 - The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, along with lead partners Call of Duty Endowment (CODE) and Lockheed Martin, will join the U.S. Army, the U.S. Departments of Labor, Defense, and Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Small Business Administration, and hundreds of transitioning service members and spouses for a ‘Fort Stewart Transition Summit’ will kick off Weds. afternoon.

For two days, business and civic leaders will gather to develop and strengthen military hiring initiatives across the country. This is the first of 20 such summits that will be held on installations across the country in 2015.

These summits – primarily focused on supporting service members preparing to exit the military – are a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors to connect transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses to meaningful employment opportunities.

Day One will feature town hall-style forums led by senior military officers, public officials, and business leaders on developing strong military recruitment strategies, dispelling myths about veteran and spouse hiring, and encouraging participants to share their own company or community's best practices with key government agencies and decision-makers as well as a networking reception. At the reception, job-seeking attendees will have the chance to meet and interact with local and national business leaders, recruitment heads for national companies, and veteran and military spouse service agencies.

Day Two will allow nearly 1,000 service members preparing to transition into the civilian workforce to hear directly from federal and state service agencies as well as veteran-friendly employers about the career resources, training, and opportunities available to help them.

The event will culminate in a Hiring Our Heroes job fair for transitioning service members, National Guard, reserve components, veterans, and military spouses. More than 60 employers are expected to participate with jobs available for attendees of all ranks and levels of experience. Since Hiring Our Heroes began in March 2011, more than 1,500 companies have hired 25,000 veterans and military spouses as a result of more than 840 hiring fairs.

Registration for this free event is open to all interested military, federal, and state agencies; community leaders; and businesses and employers looking to hire veterans.

  • Colonel Adam Rocke, Director of the Soldier for Life Program, Office of the Chief of Staff, U.S. Army

  • Maurice Buchanan, Atlanta Regional Administrator, U.S. Department of Labor Veterans' Employment and Training Service (DOL VETS)

  • Patrick Bean, Transition Services Manager, Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield

  • Colonel Charles Tulaney (USMC, Ret.), Military Relations Manager – Capital Region, Lockheed Martin

  • Jim O’Donnell, Executive Director and Director of Military and Veteran Recruiting, JPMorgan Chase & Co.

  • Matthew Heaney, Ph.D., State Director, Georgia, U.S. Department of Labor – Veterans' Employment and Training Service

  • Kevin Ryan, Co-Founder and CEO, Service Brewing Company
