Dec. 5 - Sidney Lanier Bridge cable inspections require Single Lane Closures on US 17 for two weeks

Category: Ports & Transportation

Brunswick Business Journal Staff Report

December 5, 2016 - A Contractor for the Georgia DOT will be preforming cable inspections on the Sidney Lanier Bridge which will require single lane closures from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, starting Dec. 7.

If weather permits, these inspections will begin Weds.  December 7 and should be completed December 21, according to the DOT.

A single right hand travel lane and shoulder closures will occur during the inspections on US 17/SR 25 in either the northbound or southbound side on the bridge. The closures will not extend beyond the limits of the bridge.

Involvted is US 17/SR 25 on the Sidney Lanier Bridge in Glynn County.

This is a work zone, and extreme caution is necessary.  Motorists are advised to reduce speeds as they travel through this work zone. Message signs, barrels and cones will be utilized to alert the public of the upcoming changes.

Georgia DOT is also working on a 6.1-mile-long shoulder widening and resurfacing project in the county east of the Jekyll River Bridge.  Contractors for Georgia DOT will be installing lane closures on SR 520 from US 17/SR 25 extending east of the bridge. If weather permits, work will begin tomorrow from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., Monday through Friday but weekend work could occur.  All work is weather contingent.

This $1.6 million resurfacing and shoulder widening project was awarded to East Coast Asphalt, LLC. of Douglas, Georgia. The work should be completed Spring of 2017.

Highway shoulders enhance driver safety and provides structural support to the roadway pavement by discharging water further from the travel lanes, reducing the undermining of the base and subgrade of the highway.
