Mar. 24 - Glynn Republican Party postpones election of chairman; No candidates primary reason

By Lou Phelps, Brunswick Business Journal

March 24, 2014 – The Glynn County Republican Party held its latest in a series of candidates’ forums last Monday evening, March 17, and announced that they will postpone the previously announced election of a new party Chairman until after the May 20th primary. The local party normally holds its annual meeting in March.

According to Jeff Kilgore, Acting Chair/1st Vice Chair, “the election for the new GCRP Chair is hereby postponed until some date after the May 20, 2014 Primary.”  No reason was given.

But according to former party Chairman Jeff Jones, party leaders have been unsuccessful in identifying a candidate to take over.

“We didn’t have a good candidate that we were aware of, that had appeared. With everybody tied up with the primary and local elections, Kilgore decided that we should let the primary take place. There are 13 people who are Republicans running, including the Board of Education, Water/Sewer Board, County Commission and State Rep races.”

Jones was elected Chairman at the party’s annual meeting last March for a two-year term, but had to step down as of this month when Tony Thaw qualified for the House 167 seat that Jones is also seeking, insuring there would be a primary contest in May.  Even without a challenger, Jones would have had to step down after the May 20primary.

“The Georgia GOP has rules about under what conditions a County Chairman must resign. As soon as someone body qualifies for a race the Chairman is seeking, they must resign,” he explained.

It’s a seat that Jones says he has been campaigning for since last July.
