Oct. 17 - Abrams Makes Campaign Stops in Brunswick and Kingsland

Brunswick Business Journal Staff Report

October 17, 2017 - Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams made a stop at the Mary Ross Waterfront Park in Brunswick as part of her “We Are Georgia – Our Voices. Our Votes. Our Time” Early Vote Bus Tour. She also made a held a rally in Kingsland.

In addition to encouraging her supporters to vote early, she spoke about jobs. “It’s not enough to say you want to create more jobs, a lot of us know there are enough jobs - we’ve got two or three of them,” said Abrams “What we need are better jobs, good paying jobs.” At an earlier campaign stop at Georgia Southern University, she said Georgians shouldn’t have to work in hospitality or agriculture to make a living, suggesting the state should create renewable energy jobs because "Climate change is real."

The Kemp campaign was quick to criticize Abrams for her remarks about the state’s tourism and agriculture industries. “Brian Kemp understands the incredible impact that agriculture and tourism have on our state," said Cody Hall, Kemp for Governor Press Secretary in a media release. "He values the sacrifices made by our farmers to feed their family and ours. Kemp knows that tourism drives local economies throughout our state - creating jobs and economic opportunity for people of all walks of life. Stacey Abrams brash and condescending comments undermine our most valued industries and disparage hardworking Georgians in every corner of our state.”

Abrams responded on twitter to the negative reaction to her job remarks. “To be clear, my point is that we must continue to diversify our economy and raise wages across the board,” tweeted Abrams. “Agriculture and hospitality are vital sectors of our economy in Georgia - but we can do more and lead in new sectors as well.”
