December 13, 2018 – The new president of the College of Coastal Georgia, Dr. Michelle Johnston, will be the College’s keynote speaker at the fall commencement ceremony on Friday December 14, 2 p.m. at the Jekyll Island Convention Center.

“I am very excited to address the fall graduates as we honor them for their hard work and perseverance in earning a degree,” said Johnston.

Johnston, who began her career as the sixth president of the College in July, will address the first class to graduate under her leadership at the College. More than 230 degrees will be conferred upon Fall graduates.

Before becoming a Mariner, Johnston served as the president of the University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College in Ohio. Her career in higher education has included 10 years of service as a faculty member and more than 20 years in administration, with positions at University of Montevallo, University of Louisiana-Monroe, Mississippi State University, and Wood College.

Dr. Johnston holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama, a master’s degree from Louisiana State University, a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Mississippi State University, and a Post Doc in Marketing Management from the University of Florida.

“College graduation is such a special time for our students,” said Johnston. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to address the fall graduates and encourage them to continue in their pursuit of their goals and personal success. I’m confident that their experiences and education at the College have prepared them well for the future.”

For her first graduation at the College, Johnston is looking forward to greeting each graduate as they walk across the stage.

“What an honor to share this important moment with our graduates, their friends and family, our faculty and staff, our Foundation Board Trustees, and community leaders and supporters. These students, now alumni, will always be part of the Mariner family.”
