Sept. 17 - College of Coastal Georgia Begins Library Expansion

Brunswick Business Journal Staff Report

September 17,  2018 – The recent growth of the College of Coastal Georgia has created increased demand for library services and academic assistance. As a result, the school is expanding Gould Memorial Library.

“As our student body has grown, we have seen an uptick in the demand for both space and assistance at the library,” said Dean of Library Services Debra Holmes. “We are all looking forward to the expansion, which will help us meet the increased demands on the library.”

Coastal Georgia’s enrollment has grown 19 percent from Fall 2009 to Fall 2017. The majority of that growth has been driven by the exponential rise in the percentage of students seeking a bachelor’s degree—from 3 percent in 2009 to 62 percent in 2017.

Throughout the last decade, the college has continued to add new degree programs, the latest of which were this fall’s new Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Bachelor of Science in Tourism and Hospitality Management.

The library was originally built in January 1973. The 3,025 square-foot extension will be added to the College Drive-facing side of the current building. With the extension, the library will total 34,023 square feet. The extension will include a study room, active learning space, conference room, and learning commons.

The library expansion project is being funded by the University System of Georgia. Lavender and Associates based in Statesboro won the competitive bid to execute the construction project.

“I am grateful for the support of the University System of Georgia, which has made this project possible,” said President Michelle Johnston. “In addition to providing much needed space, this expansion provides us with the opportunity to bring all of our academic support services for students under one roof.”

Work on the expansion is currently underway and scheduled to be completed in June 2019.
