July 22, 2013 - Lonnie V. Roberts, former vice president of institutional effectiveness at Altamaha Technical College, is now officially the Interim President of the college, taking over for Lorette Hoover who has accepted the presidency at Columbus Technical College in Columbus, Georgia, her hometown.

According to Roberts, “In the coming years, 68% of the workforce will require more than a high school diploma and less than a four year degree. At Altamaha Technical College, we offer just that - with more than 80 associate degree, diploma and certificate programs to choose from.”

Lonnie Roberts is a native and life-long resident of Hazlehurst and Jeff Davis County. graduating from Jeff Davis High School.  He received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and a Master’s degree from Valdosta State University.  He is also a graduate of the Georgia Academy for Economic Development.

He has also served as the Jeff Davis County Clerk and County Administrator for almost 21 years.  He retired as administrator in August 2001 and went to work for Altamaha Technical College as Director of Institutional Effectiveness.  In 2012, he became Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness before being named Acting President.

He has been active in local civic organizations, including the Lions, and is a past president of the Hazlehurst Jeff Davis County Chamber of Commerce.  He is married to Dr. Gina Roberts and they have one daughter, Georgia.

Altamaha has 15 Adult Support Centers throughout the college’s regional service area of Appling, Camden, Glynn, Jeff Davis, Long, McIntosh and Wayne counties, and helped more than 700 people earn their GED last year alone, according to Roberts.  And from those students, 46 percent of them went on to register for classes in the school’s technical college programs – giving it one of the highest transition-to-college rates in the state.

Roberts states that the college’s graduates “enjoy a 98.6% job placement rate, and that number increased last year by more than a point, in a depressed economy! We know that people are anxious about their futures – especially in our current economic climate – but whether it is in the medical field, manufacturing, business, or the service sector – Altamaha Technical College programs position graduates for career success.”

Altamaha is a unit of the Technical College System of Georgia, and served nearly 13,000 people last year through its credit enrollment, adult education, ESL classes and work force development services.

Altamaha Technical College is located in Hazelhurst, Georgia, along the Altamaha River.

The Commissioner’s office has not yet outlined the process they will be using to fill the position permanently, Roberts said, in an interview this week with Coastal Empire News.
