BDN Staff Report

July 26, 2013 - Coastal Empire News, headquartered in Savannah, GA, has completed its soft-launch period and formally begun publication today of three daily news websites to serve the Brunswick metro market: BrunswickDailyNews.com, BrunswickBusinessJournal.net and BrunswickFamily.net. The daily news and women’s and family’s website is free to all readers.

BrunswickDailyNews.com provides community, political, events, obituaries and hard news for Glynn, Camden, McIntosh, Wayne, Brantley and Charlton counties, seven days a week.

“We have no political affiliation or agenda on our editorial pages,” according to Publisher and Owner Lou Phelps. “We have two primary goals: Tocover the news and serve the readers and advertisers in the six-counties of the Brunswick metro area, and to link the 12-counties of the Georgia coast – making it easier for Brunswick area readers to keep up to date on the news, business and events in the Savannah metro area and along the entire Georgia coast.”

“We been encouraged for years by business and civic leaders familiar with our digital news platforms of the Savannah Daily News and the Savannah Business Journal to expand into Brunswick, but we waited for the economy to take an upturn.  Fortunately, Georgia continues on its growth path of both population and business opportunity, and we’re proud to be one of the surviving entrepreneurial and innovation companies that has come through the trough of tough economic times over the past five years,” she added.

Coastal Empire News (CEN) features a team of professional journalists with extensive news experience in the area.  Tim Rutherford, a former editor at the Savannah Morning News, will oversee news in the Brunswick area. The company has also named Jared Keever as Brunswick beat reporter, covering City Commission and Glynn County Commission.  Clark Byron, senior reporter for the company, led the initial soft launch into Brunswick.

About Coastal Empire News (CEN)

CEN is a member of the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce, the Camden County Chamber of Commerce and the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce.  The company is also a member of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association – that group’s first digital-only news company – as well as the Inland Press Association and Congressional Press Corps.

In addition to the three new websites, CEN has also launched Coastal Empire Classifieds and Coastal Empire Real Estate – to link the 12-counties of Coastal Georgia. The website offers free classified advertising to its readers in many categories.

“Our new CoastalEmpireClassifieds.com allows our users to place their ads independently 24/7/365, something that many of our competitors are not offering at this time.  It is technology similar to Craigslist, but we control the advertising to feature local ads versus national advertising – local jobs, local cars, and local homes is the goal,” Phelps explained.

CEN also uses the latest in advertising serving technology, including Google’s DFP software that allows geo-targeting, and provides outstanding reports for analysis by our advertising partners.

CEN plans to open an office in the Brunswick area to serve advertisers.

About the Publisher

The company is independently owned by Ms. Phelps, a Savannah resident since 1995, though her family has deep roots in Georgia and the South Carolina Lowcountry.  “My mother was born and raised in Macon, attending Wesleyan College, and my grandfather was part of the leadership of The Georgia Kaolin Company. But our ancestors go back to the late 1600’s, as one of the immigrating English families with land grants from King George into Charleston who then became Sea Island cotton, indigo and rice plantation owners. The family history drew me back to Georgia and this beautiful area.”

She is also a national media consultant and owner of Phelps, Cutler & Associates, founded in 1991. (www.Phelpscutler.com.)  Lou has been involved in the launch and management of two of the three initial virtual daily news sites in the United States - Savannah Daily News at www.savdaily news.com, launched in 2004 which she owns, Fort Wayne Daily News at www.fwdailynews.com, launched in 2006, owned by KPC Media Group in Fort Wayne, IN. and www.CapeCodToday.com, founded by her business associate Walter Brooks in 2002.

Her media clients have included some of the U.S.’s largest media companies including Civitas Media, the Tribune Company and Thomson Newspapers.  She has also served as a consultant and member of the Board of Directors of KPC Media Group for the past 14 years.

Among her civic activities, Ms. Phelps served on the Board of Directors of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce for five years, and was honored as that group's "Helen Head Small Business Champion."
